Creamy Mug Mac Cheese (Print)

A creamy, single-serve mac made in minutes using the microwave for a quick, comforting snack or meal.

# Components:

→ Pasta

01 - 1/2 cup uncooked elbow macaroni

→ Liquid

02 - 1/2 cup water
03 - 1/4 cup whole or 2% milk

→ Cheese & Seasonings

04 - 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
05 - 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
06 - 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
07 - Salt and black pepper to taste

→ Topping (optional)

08 - 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
09 - Pinch smoked paprika

# Method:

01 - Place the macaroni and water into a large microwave-safe mug (minimum 12 oz capacity). Stir to combine.
02 - Microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes. Stir, then continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until pasta is al dente and most water is absorbed, about 4 to 5 minutes total. Monitor to prevent overflow.
03 - Stir in the milk, shredded cheddar, Dijon mustard, and garlic powder until well combined.
04 - Microwave for an additional 30 to 40 seconds until the cheese melts and the sauce achieves a creamy texture.
05 - Stir again, season with salt and black pepper to taste, and optionally top with grated Parmesan and smoked paprika. Serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • Ready in under 10 minutes
  • Minimal clean-up with just one mug
02 -
  • Use a large mug (at least 12 oz (350 ml)) to prevent boiling over in the microwave
  • Sharp cheddar gives the best flavor, but other cheeses like Monterey Jack or mozzarella work well too
03 -
  • Add a spoonful of cream cheese for extra creaminess
  • For gluten-free, use gluten-free pasta and double-check cheese packaging
